CBN & You: All About Cannabinol

Cannabinol, also known as CBN, is a plant compound sourced from the hemp plant. It has gained attention lately for its potential health perks, and although the science is still emerging through studies and research, CBN appears truly promising. CBN is one of more than 100 cannabinoids identified in the cannabis plant. For a full breakdown, see our cannabinoids list and effects.
Much like THC or CBD, CBN is a cannabinoid found in the Cannabis sativa plant and interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS). CBN is considered a minor cannabinoid because it is only present in trace amounts until the plant breaks down. CBN becomes abundant during the aging of THC through exposure to light and high temperatures via drying, storage and heating. Unlike THC, however, CBN is non-psychoactive.
CBN May Improve Sleep
A 2024 study in Experimental and Clinical Psychopharmacology examined sleep quality with a placebo, CBN alone, or CBN plus CBD. Participants taking 20 milligrams of CBN experienced less overall sleep disturbance and less daytime fatigue than the placebo group, and there was no further improvement by adding CBD. Ever hear someone say old weed makes you sleepy? This may be because older cannabis products are more likely to have higher levels of CBN.
CBN May Reduce Pain and Inflammation
A 2023 review in Pain and Therapy examined the impact of cannabinoids on various types of pain caused by inflammatory conditions. The authors concluded that the compounds improved chronic pain subsets, including neuropathic, fibromyalgia and geriatric pain. However, CBN has not been studied separately, so understanding its unique effect on pain requires further research.
CBN Neuroprotective Properties
A 2005 study found that CBN could help delay the onset of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a disease that affects cells in the brain and the spinal cord. CBN was given in small amounts for a period of 12 weeks for this study. However, much more dedicated research is required to explore this aspect of CBN.
THC vs. CBD vs. CBN vs. CBG
Although found within the same plant, THC, CBD, CBN and CBG have some key differences:
- THC (psychoactive) affects the way the brain works. By interacting primarily with CB1 receptors, the mood, memory and appetite are influenced alongside a “high” feeling.
- CBD (non-psychoactive) may affect anxiety, pain and inflammation, as well as reduce seizures. It interacts with CB1 and CB2 receptors.
- CBN (non-psychoactive) interacts with the ECS and may provide benefits that differ from both THC and CBD.
- CBG (non-psychoactive) is often called the “mother of all cannabinoids” as it plays a foundational role in how the cannabis plant produces many of its most well-known compounds, like THC and CBD, said Bridget Cole Williams, M.D., a Detroit-based family medicine physician specializing in traditional and holistic health. “Think of it as the building block or precursor that starts it all.” CBG is a key player in cannabis chemistry and science because it’s the origin of many of the plant’s beneficial compounds, added Dr. Williams.

Potential Risks & Side Effects of CBN
Another drawback of too few studies is the lack of information about risks and side effects associated with CBN. If you’re planning on consuming CBN for the first time (or THC, CBD, CBG, etc.), talk to your doctor so the possible benefits, side effects and risks for your specific health circumstances may be addressed ahead of time. This includes potential interactions with other medications. Drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth and changes in appetite are common occurrences for some who use full-spectrum products. Additional effects could include a rapid heart rate and worsening of mental health issues.
CBN may be worth exploring for adults dealing with disrupted sleep, chronic pain or inflammatory conditions, particularly those who want potential relief without the psychoactive effects of THC. Older adults managing pain or sleep issues are one group researchers have specifically examined. That said, CBN is not a substitute for medical advice, and anyone with existing health conditions or on medication should speak with their doctor before trying any cannabinoid product.
CBN should not be taken as a daily sleep aid, by those whose doctors have advised against it, those who have a history of substance misuse, those who are under the age of 25, or those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Further, since CBN is similar to THC, it could cause a positive cannabis drug test so be mindful of this scenario. If adverse or allergic reactions occur from any product including those containing CBN, call 911 or immediately visit the nearest hospital for medical assistance.
