What are CBD, CBG and CBN?
Humans (and some animals!) utilize a system called the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) to help regulate body functions, including sleep, mood and pain control. Compounds in the cannabis plant called cannabinoids can interact with the ECS to produce various effects, such as insomnia relief, anxiety release and pain easing.
Non-psychoactive cannabinoids include CBD, CBG and CBN, while the most well-known psychoactive cannabinoid is THC. Non-psychoactive cannabinoids are considered non-intoxicating, but they retain the possible therapeutic effects to the ECS.
- CBD, or cannabidiol, has the same molecular structure as THC, but is non-intoxicating due to its inability to bind to CB1 (central nervous system) and CB2 (immune cell) receptors in the same way.
- CBG, or cannabigerol, is where all cannabinoids within the plant begin. Without CBG, many other cannabinoids, such as THC and CBD, wouldn’t exist. It is less abundant in mature cannabis plants however, since most CBG is converted into other cannabinoids as the plant grows, which makes it harder to extract in large quantities.
- CBN, or cannabinol, is created when THC ages and breaks down due to exposure to oxygen and heat.
CBD vs CBG
While CBD vs CBG share some resemblances, they differ in chemical structure and bodily interactions. CBG is able to bind directly to CB1 and CB2 receptors, while CBD cannot. The main difference between CBD vs CBG is that CBG interacts more directly with the body’s cannabinoid receptors, while CBD has a more indirect effect. Due to this direct and indirect effect, there is increasing interest in the use of CBG and CBD together. This method is considered to trigger the entourage effect, in which different compounds work together synergistically to create stronger, more comprehensive effects than any single compound alone.
CBD vs CBN
CBN is most commonly associated with supporting a healthy sleep cycle. CBN is believed to have a mild attraction for the CB1 (central nervous system) receptor, while CBD indirectly influences the entire ECS. While CBD is abundant in supply, CBN is less so as it must be created from aging. This also means CBN has less research behind it, and it can be more expensive to purchase.
CBD vs CBG vs CBN
When deciding between CBD vs CBG vs CBN, consider your individual health needs and the specific effects you are seeking. As each option offers unique benefits, your choice should be based on the areas or symptoms you want to address, as well as your preferred method of consumption.
Below are a few key factors to ponder when choosing the right cannabinoid for your needs. Before purchasing a cannabinoid product, always read labels carefully, as many products mix combinations of cannabinoids. Microdosing is growing in popularity as a way to experience and consume CBD, CBG and CBN.
Anxiety, Stress, General Wellness
CBD is thought to be the most versatile cannabinoid, often utilized for anxiety and stress management. Its calmative, non-psychoactive nature makes it a great option for promoting general wellness without causing drowsiness, therefore making it appropriate for daytime use.

Neuroprotection, Eye Health
CBG has garnered attention for its neuroprotective properties, making it potentially beneficial for individuals with neurodegenerative diseases. It also shows promise for eye health, particularly in reducing intraocular pressure, helpful for those with glaucoma.

Pain Relief, Inflammation
Both CBD and CBG are effective at easing pain and decreasing inflammation. CBD is often used for chronic pain conditions like arthritis, while CBG may offer additional benefits for digestive inflammation, such as with inflammatory bowel disease.

Sleep, Relaxation
CBN is known for its sedative effects, making it an excellent option for improving sleep or slowing down at the end of the day.

Another Important Cannabinoid: CBC
CBC, or cannabichromene, is considered to plan an important role in cannabinoid synergy. Its studied potential includes mood regulation by influencing serotonin receptors, promotion of neuroprotections and brain health, and reduced inflammation — all without interacting with CB1 or CB2 receptors. CBC is typically paired with CBG to enhance overall effects.
